Shirley Temple

The original mocktail

Glass Highball
Method Built
Garnish Maraschino Cherry

The original mocktail. Ginger ale sweetened with grenadine, finished with a cherry. Named after the child actress in 1930s Hollywood — a Beverly Hills bartender wanted her to have something fancy to order while her parents had proper cocktails.

Ingredients

Method

Fill a highball with ice. Pour ginger ale to three-quarters full. Add grenadine. Drop in a maraschino cherry. A squeeze of lime is traditional but optional.

Created at Chasen's restaurant in Beverly Hills in the early 1930s to honor child actress Shirley Temple, though Brown Derby and Royal Hawaiian Hotel claim authorship. Per Difford's Guide #1817. Non-alcoholic mocktail; not an IBA official cocktail. Notes: Shirley Temple herself described the drink negatively and attributed it to Brown Derby, not Chasen's—origin attribution remains disputed.
