What we collect
Bar Necessities collects only what's needed to run the app and the optional Jig AI subscription. Specifically:
- Sign In with Apple identifier. When you sign in, Apple sends us an opaque user ID. You can choose to share or hide your email when signing in; if you share it, we store it with your account but don't use it to contact you or for marketing, and it's removed when you delete your account. Without sign-in, the app works without Jig and without Open Bar.
- Subscription state. If you subscribe to Jig, your subscription status (active / expired) is stored against your Apple user ID so we can verify entitlement.
- Usage counters. Per-month and per-day Jig turn counts so we can enforce the free-tier and subscriber limits.
Where your bar data lives
- On your device by default. Your ingredients, ratings, favorites, tasting notes, and history live in the app's local database. Two features you choose to turn on send some of it off your device: chatting with Jig sends your bar context to Anthropic (see Jig below), and starting an Open Bar link posts your makeable-cocktail list to our server (see Open Bar below). If you use neither, none of this leaves your device.
- We don't sell, share, or rent your data. Period.
- We don't run ads. We don't track you across apps or sites.
Analytics on this website
The barnecessities.app website uses privacy-friendly, cookieless analytics (Vercel Web Analytics) to understand traffic — aggregate page views and anonymous interaction events, such as which outbound product links get clicked. It sets no cookies, collects no personal information, and doesn't track you across other sites or tie activity to your identity. This applies to the website only; the iOS app doesn't do this.
Some pages link to products at third-party retailers (for example, a bottle of bitters). Where a link is an affiliate link we say so on the page, and we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Clicking through takes you to the retailer's own site, governed by their privacy policy — not this one.
Open Bar (v1.4+)
When you start an Open Bar link to share with guests, here's exactly what happens:
- Bar Necessities computes the list of cocktail IDs your bar can make right now on your device, then posts that list (and an optional party display name, if you set one) to our server.
- Your bar inventory is never transmitted. Guests see only what your bar can make, never what's in it.
- Guests need the link URL to view; tokens are opaque and unguessable.
- Links expire at the end of the following day, unless you extend them. You can end any link from Settings → Open Bar at any time; revocation takes effect immediately.
- Open Bar links always include non-alcoholic drinks alongside cocktails, so guests who aren't drinking alcohol can find a drink without having to ask.
- We log standard web request information (timestamp, IP, user-agent) per Cloudflare's default request handling. We don't collect any identifying information about guests.
Jig (the AI bartender)
When you chat with Jig, your messages — plus a snapshot of your bar context, gathered on your device to personalize the reply — are sent to Anthropic's API (Claude) through our server. That context includes:
- The ingredients currently stocked in your bar
- Which cocktails and non-alcoholic drinks your bar can make
- Your favorited cocktails
- Your tasting history: which drinks you've made, the dates, your star ratings, whether you'd make each again, and any free-text tasting notes you've written
- Drink preferences Jig has inferred from your past conversations
- The current date, time, and season
- Recent messages from your current conversation with Jig
Anthropic processes this strictly to generate Jig's response; under our API agreement your inputs and outputs are not used to train Claude's models. Our server doesn't keep your chat messages or bar context in any database — it stores only the per-day and per-month turn counts used to enforce the free and subscriber limits. See Anthropic's privacy policy for details on their handling. If you'd prefer to keep all of this on your device, simply don't use Jig — the rest of the app works without it.
Account deletion
You can request immediate deletion of all server-side data tied to your account by tapping "Delete my account" in Settings, or by emailing [email protected]. Deletion removes your user record, subscription state, usage counters, and any active Open Bar links. Apple-side subscription cancellation is separate — manage that in iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions.
Children
Bar Necessities is intended for adults of legal drinking age. We don't knowingly collect data from children under 13.
